With a significant drop in koala numbers in South Eastern Queensland over the past 20 years, locals are angry as plans for housing development in the northern suburbs of Brisbane to threaten koala bushland.  The year-long dispute to save the bushland has reignited as the global investment firm ADPEN appeals Brisbane City Council’s rejection of its application to develop the core piece of koala habitat. The introduction of pop-up bike lanes has been suggested by Queensland’s peak cycling lobby group to help locals get around during the pandemic.  In a detailed proposal, the lobby group has urged Brisbane City Council and the state government to follow many other cities in introducing bikes lanes on busy inner-city streets.  The proposal outlines several streets where lanes could be introduced to keep cyclists away from cars and other heavy vehicles.  George street and Mary street have been recognised as some of the most unsafe streets for cyclists in the CBD. A popular tree located in Shorncliffe which was scheduled for removal has been saved by community spirit.  The tree was earmarked by Brisbane City Council for removal but community spirit prevailed and decorated the dead tree in colourful woollen pompoms in hopes of saving it.  Councillor Jared Cassidy has commented on the removal of the tree with concerns about escarpments in the area. Several trees had become deceased as a result of erosion and vegetation tampering from Sandgate to Shorncliffe, he said.
